Dear Dr. Errol G Southers, Rasha Gerges Shields, Maria Lou Calanche, Fabian Garcia and Teresa Sanchez-Gordon,
I write to you today as a concerned resident of Los Angeles. As you know, on May 2, 2024, Yong Yang was shot and killed by Officer Andres Lopez, directed by Sergeant Ruvalcaba. The Yang family called the LACDMH to help their son, only to be met with violence and injustice. Almost one year after his death, the Yang family and the people of Los Angeles have yet to see justice. Instead, they have been left to deal with a lifetime of grief.
We the people of Los Angeles urge you to take action against excessive force, negligent death and a clear violation of the Bane Act in the case of Yong Yang. We urge you to hold officers accountable for causing the death of Yong Yang and irreparable harm to our community. We urge you to implement policies that restrict the use of deadly firearms in mental health crises cases. Now is your time to take action.
Sincerely,Your Name
